FAQs About Sundo Breathwork

What is Sundo?

What is Sundo?

Sundo is an ancient Taoist yoga and breathwork practice from Korea, with roots said to be over 10,000 years old. It combines gentle stretches, simple calisthenics, and deep breathing. Like martial arts, Sundo uses a belt system for growth and structure, but there is no fighting. Instead, it focuses on building balance between body, breath, and mind.

How a Sundo Class is Structured

1. Warm-Up
Gentle stretches and movements

2. Breathwork
Lower belly (diaphragmatic) breathing with guided postures

3. Cool Down
Energy circulation movements

Why Practice Sundo?

Practicing Sundo steadily—even just a little breathing each day—can support mental, physical and emotional health.

Create Both Calm and Focus
Calm doesn’t mean checked out and focus doesn’t mean stressed out.

Ground and Center
Breathing into the lower belly brings awareness back into the body, helping you feel safe and connected.

Reduce Mental Chatter and Distress
Over time, the practice can quiet racing thoughts and help ease emotional intensity.

Support Your Nervous System
Lower belly breathing activates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest”), which helps reduce stress.

Boost Wellbeing Chemicals
This type of breathing encourages the body’s natural release of serotonin, a neurochemical that supports mood and stability.

A Few Gentle Reminders

Do your best
Stay connected to your body and breath.

It’s okay if your mind wanders
Just notice it and gently come back to the breath.

Move at your own pace
Do not strain.

Even a little consistent practice can create meaningful change over time.
